Handmade or machine-made rug?
By now, you may have noticed that no machine processes are used to produce handwoven rugs and they are made entirely of natural dyes that can last for days, months, and even years, but here’s what you don’t know about their synthetic counterparts. You will be surprised.
Differences between hand-woven rugs and machine-made rugs
A lot of research has been done and they have come to the conclusion that there are several differences between hand-woven rugs and rugs woven from artificial fibers:
About ten million pounds of rugs are thrown away around the world every year.
These very high quality rugs that have an heirloom quality become more valuable as they age and are passed down from generation to generation instead of being thrown away.
A new rug can be a source of release of chemicals that cause various symptoms of illness and eye and nose irritation, headache and shortness of breath. This problem can be more severe for babies and the elderly.
Handwoven wool/silk rug is non-toxic and can remove some common pollutants such as formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide and purify the air. The silk/wool handwoven rug continuously purifies the indoor air for up to 30 years.
We can consider the rug as the cause of many respiratory problems such as allergies and asthma; these problems are partly related to fungus, mold, pollen, pet hair, and their body dander that are deposited in the synthetic fiber rug.
Handmade rug is not allergenic and bacteria cannot grow in it.
The synthetic fibers used in the weaving of machine-made rugs melt instead of igniting in case of fire, and therefore, if they come into contact with the skin, they leave a severe burn and, in addition, they pollute the air with chemicals.
Handwoven rugs are inherently resistant to fire and have high moisture and protein in them, which makes it difficult for them to catch fire, and they have self-extinguishing properties if the source of fire is lost.
Rugs woven from synthetic fibers do not have the advantage of being able to heat or cool the room.
Handwoven rug is a natural source of soundproofing that is often used in apartments and recording studios. This type of rug can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water vapor without feeling damp, and then releases or maintains this absorbed moisture so that you feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
