Having oriental rugs in your forever home is not only an excellent décor option because of the style that they radiate, but because of their history. These rugs are hand knitted carpets that only come from eastern world countries. Some of the world’s largest rug exporters come from China, India, Russia, Turkey, Nepal, and Asia. You may have heard of the Persian rug— a finely knitted carpet that comes exclusively from iran. These type of rugs are also oriental, but are known predominantly because of their rich colors, intricate designs, and distinct knotting techniques.

Because so many of our customers are interested in the historical significance behind these carpets, here is a brief saga of the oriental rug:

Back In The Day…

These rugs came to fruition in in ancient times. We know that carpet weaving existed in Iran during these times and some scientists believe the oriental rug dates back to 500 B.C. More specifically, they believe that the Pazyric carpet dates back to Achaemenian period. Records indict that the Achaemenian court of Cyrus the Great at Pasargadae relished in these types of rugs and Alexander II of Macedonia’s tomb is said to be draped in these lavish garments.  Chinese texts dating back to the Sassanid period (224 – 641 CE) are the first known documented evidence of Persian carpets. Because of their historical significance, these carpets are worth a fortune in today’s market.

The Meaning Behind Oriental Rugs

Indigenous cultures play a vital part in the making of these rugs. Each rug will have a specific pattern, palette, and weave to reflect certain cultures. Each one used their own weaving technique that can now be traced to geographical spots as well as nomadic tribes. Urban area generally used floral designs in their weaving, while geometric patterns hint toward the travelling tribes. If you ever happen upon a fluid directional design, these are said to be “prayer” rugs of that tribe. Oriental carpets were used as methods to document cultural events such as weddings or death. Plants, animals, and colors were used to symbolize intangible connotations such as grief, happiness, strength, or weakness. Each family would use specific designs to outline these events, which is why oriental rugs in Tampa are highly coveted materials. They history they hold is unlike any other decoration you can find for your home.

How They Are Made

In ancient times, oriental carpets were derived from organic material. The weaving textiles typically consistent of silk or wool and were knotted expertly after they were dyed natural substances such as pomegranate, insects, or surmac. How they were made greatly influences the price of these rugs today. The number of knots, the fabric used, and even the design can raise the price of an oriental piece significantly. Each country also holds unique techniques and designs that varied throughout the history of oriental carpets.
